    History (Origin)
  • Cheongnyongdae is a rock located below the road of Gaju-dong bordering on Busan. It is said that Sir. Choi Chiwon - a great scholar and celebrated writer at the end of Silla - enjoyed fishing on it. Tide was in and out at that time but now the place has been turned to land. On the granitic rock of 2.4m X 1.4m is an engraved passage of "Cheongnyongdae Chiwonseo" (60cam X 35cm), which is presumed to be his handwritings and his descendents erected a monument ("Cheongnyongdaebi") in memory of his great spirit. Choi Chiwon was born of a celebrated family, which produced great confucian scholars, in Saryangbu(Gyeongju), Silla, 856 (The 7th Year of King Museong). He went to "Dang (an ancient name of China)" when he was twelve years old. He passed the highest-level of civil service examination at the age of eighteen in 874 and was appointed a public official to rule over a province, but he resigned his office two years later. All of his writings (including letters, manifestos, precepts)are compiled to a book of "Gyewonpilgyeong". When Silla suffered from political confusion and all the people fall into extreme distress in 894 (The 8th Year of Queen Jinseong), he presented "10 Measures for the Relief". The queen accepted it and promoted him to an official rank of "Achan (The 6th Official Rank of Silla). But the fortune of Silla was already declining and he deserted his whole ideal in frustration to retire to a hermitage in Mt. Jiri. He was forty years old at that time. In addition to "Cheongnyongdae", there is another place where we can find a trace of him, which is called "Gangseondae". It is not clear when he visited this place, but an old district record of "Ungcheoneupji" says that he used to enjoy the moonlit in a boat at "Gangseondae".
